June 20,2017--Due to Medog County's unique status in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau ecosystem, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) plans to build the Medog Earth Landscape and Earth System Comprehensive Observation and Research Center, which will further strengthen China's monitoring to the ecosystem in southeast Tibet, provide support for scientific research, and help Tibet build national ecological security barriers.
According to the Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, the Medog station will start construction in the latter half of this year, and the station site is located in Dexing Village, Medog County. After construction, the station can effectively make up blind areas of space observation. In addition, scientists can observe and research the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau on the whole with other research stations in Namtso, Nyingchi City's Lulang Town, Ngari Prefecture's Rutog Town, Nagqu Prefecture's Co Nyi District, and on the northern slope of Mt.Qomolangma, which are all built by the CAS.
The altitude drop of Medog County is very large. With various natural altitudinal belt types, the biodiversity is abundant. Therefore, Medog is very special in the whole ecosystem of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
On the basis of Medog's research value, researchers will conduct observations for its vegetation, glaciers, and atmosphere, carry out investigations and monitoring for its biodiversity resources, and study the influences of various natural zones to climate changes.
Medog County is located in southeast Tibet and it is dubbed the "secret lotus". Its average elevation is 1200 meters. In October, 2013, the Medog Highway was officially opened to traffic.
