After the Wenzhou Commercial and Trade Market in downtown Lhasa, capital of Tibet, opened around 10 a.m., Gao Fengxia, a clothes shop owner, received several customers.
The market, covering 20,000 sq m, is located on Drosenge Road, one of the most bustling roads in downtown Lhasa.
Gao, from Xiaogan, central China's Hubei Province, began to take an interest in the emerging market of Lhasa after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway opened to traffic in July 2006.
Gao said, "After completing a study on the Internet, I found that the place is quite good because it has been a mature market near the Youth Road and people come here more often for it is a major road for Buddhism believers to turn prayer wheels."
Covering about 40 sq m, Gao's shop was filled with all kinds of suits and casual clothes, which were transported via road and railway.
Moderately-priced clothes in her shop sell the best, she said, adding that "Tibetans from the pastoral areas also buy suits in the price range of 400 to 500 yuan RMB. Sometimes, they buy three to four suits at a time as gifts for their relatives."
Zhu Qianqian, a woman from east China's Zhejiang Province, runs a cross-embroidery shop in the market.
Zhu said that she had planned to do business in Lhasa but was hesitating because the road traffic was not convenient enough. She made the decision soon after the Qinghai-Tibet Railway opened.
Now, the market has about 1,500 vendors, all of whom are optimistic about their business future. |
