In early 1959 these 14 tralpa (serf who do not do corvee labor) families in Lalu Shika in Doilungdeqen County, Lhasa, owed their lords 2,800 ke of grain, and none had sufficient food. During the land reform they received more than 500 ke (15 ke equal 1 hectare) of land, dozens of livestock and farming tools. Their debts were also canceled. The picture shows the former serf and the cattle allocated to him during reforms.
