A plan for the development in Tibet Autonomous Region, southwestern China, during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015) is now in the pipeline, said a senior official of Tibet in Beijing.
"The 5th National Work Conference on Tibet has brought a glimmer of new hope to Tibet," said Padma Choling, deputy to the 11th National People's Congress (NPC) National Committee and also chairman of the Tibet Regional Government.

"Tourism, Tibetan medicines, mineral products and farm and livestock by-products have become pillar industries in the region," he said.
Unprecedented progress has been made in construction of highways, airports and railways in Tibet. The operation of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has linked Tibet to the vast market in China, and also serves as a basis for other western provinces and regions to become involved in the development of the region, according to Padma Choling.
"Tibet is going to gear up the realignment of mineral resources, quicken the pace of setting up a mining company, to ensure the sustainable utilization and development of mineral resources." Padma Choling said, adding: "At present. the region will mainly focus on closing down some small mines." |
