Environmental pollution in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is largely due to the pollutants like carbon, plumbum and hydrargyrum from Central and South Asia, rather than human activities and polluting industries in China, delegate of CPPCC said on Thursday.
On the eve of Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in the previous year, the Dalai Lama issued a research report, blaming the warming and environmental pollution in the plateau on the activities of human being and pollutants on the process of industrialization in China.
Yao Tandong, delegate of the Third Session of the 11th National Committee of Chinese People's Political and Consultative Conference (CPPCC) said on Thurs. climate in Qinghai-Tibet Plateau was dominated by westerlies and monsoon circulations.
He said the westerlies and monsoon circulations blow industrial pollutants to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau from Central Asia and South Asia areas, respectively. Industrialization in China is one of impacts on global warming, but it seems much lighter in comparison with this.
The average temperature in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has risen by more than one degree over the last ten decades. If the trend keeps going, the area of glacier in the plateau may shrink by one-third by 2060, Yao, also head of the Institute of Qinghai-Tibet Plateau Research of Chinese Academy of Science, said.
An investigation report of Yao issued last year, provided that warming keeps its current trend, 70 percent of glacier will disappear by the end of this century. |
