The Tibet Autonomous Regional Government spent over 50 million yuan RMB building public cultural facilities in 2009, according to a regional conference attended by the leading officials of cultural departments.

A total of 33.65 million yuan was used to build 13 multi-purpose county cultural centers and 81 township cultural stations in Tibet. So far, some facilities have been put into use. Another 9 million yuan was earmarked to renovate the region's art centers.

Besides, the Government of Lyingchi Prefecture in southern Tibet earmarked 12 million yuan to provide acoustic equipment and books to 500-plus townships and villages.

Newly-built public cultural facilities have enriched people's cultural life. For instance, the Tibet Museum has received 89, 000 tourists since it opened to the public last August. More than 600 performances were staged in the communities in the whole of 2009.
